An interview about my book The Urban World and the First Christians

Tavis Bohlinger of the Logos Academic blog recently interviewed David Gill, Paul Trebilco and me about our edited book The Urban World and the First Christians (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2017), and combined the result with some fab photos of Corinth and Philippi taken by David Gill. The interview is here. The good news is that the book is now available electronically from Logos, here at a bargain price! For my summary of the book and links to other material about it, see here, and for my summary Continue reading →

The Urban World and the First Christians

I’m delighted to be able to share with you the opening pages of our new book which has very recently appeared from Eerdmans. I had the honour of editing this book with my excellent colleagues Paul Trebilco (University of Otago, New Zealand) and David Gill (University of Suffolk). These pages include the contents, authors, and the introductory chapter, which summarises the contents of each chapter. That should give you a good flavour of the book and (hopefully) encourage you to ask your librarian to order Continue reading →

Some recent writing and publishing from me

I  had a quite spell away from on the blog in the Spring, partly because I’ve been writing and publishing quite a bit. Here’s a note of four that are out and available, and a couple of others that are forthcoming. Chris Keith and Loren Stuckenbruck, WUNT II/417 Continue reading →

Engaging with Poverty in the Early Church and Today—report

Well, two excellent days of conference are over and we’ve heard some 15 papers and two short reflections on the whole conference, as well as engaging in eight half-hour question and discussion times. It’s been very stimulating with fine talks, passion and a sense of the importance of the issues we’ve discussed. And all this grew out of a conversation over coffee after the morning service one Sunday between Chris Keith and David Parish—on this evidence, let’s have more of those kinds of conversations, please! The conference was Continue reading →

Places still available for the Cities of God? conference at St Mary’s University

There are still some places available to register for the excellent ‘Cities of God?’ conference happening at St Mary’s University, Twickenham (London) on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 May. We have an outstanding line-up of speakers from New Zealand, Germany, Norway, USA, and the UK—a mixture of Classicists, New Testament scholars, and Human Geographers—and their papers cover a fascinating range of issues and perspectives on early Christian engagement with and reflection on the ancient urban setting(s). More details here, including the conference programme, abstracts of the papers, and Continue reading →
